Date of Inception: 1994/5
The AIDS Monument Committee- a diverse, international group that grew out of
the International Human Rights March held in New York in 1994- was
established to design, build and donate to the city of New York- a monument
devoted to the implications of global losses from AIDS. The committee spent
several years seeking an appropriate site with the help of the local Parks
Department and Green Streets Program. Working closely with council person
Kathryn Freed, a member of the group's advisory board, a desirable downtown
location was found in 1999, but was ultimately denied the AMC in favor of
constructing a court house there. Other sites are currently under
consideration and when one is selected, an international design competition
will be held.
