  • IDENTIFICATION AND BIO:
A postmodernist who earned his aesthetic education dancing with Merce Cunningham Dance Company from 1979 to 1986, Neil Greenberg is now a leading teacher and choreographer in the downtown New York dance scene. He is also a prominent person with AIDS, having publicly acknowledged his illness in his work beginning in 1994. Though the dances themselves bear only infrequent references to AIDS—for example, the brief solo in the Not-About-AIDS-Dance in which Greenberg mimics his brother Jon's twitching, two days before Jon's death from AIDS—the choreographer frequently layers textual projections, bits of internal conversation, on the backdrop, making AIDS an inevitable focus.

Greenberg came to New York from Minnesota in 1976 and danced with a variety of modern dance companies before joining the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. He began making his own work in 1979, forming his company, Dance By Neil Greenberg, in 1986. He has been on the faculty of SUNY Purchase since 1987 and served as Dance Curator at The Kitchen from 1995 to 99.
