IDENTIFICATION AND BIO:
A ballet dancer trained under Dayton's Schwarz sisters, Stuart Sebastian created his first ballet at age 14 for Dayton Civic Ballet, even before embarking on his professional dancing career. He danced with the National Ballet in Washington, D.C., simultaneously earning a BFA Magna Cum Laude in Communications and Performing Arts at American University. But at age 23 he retired from dancing to become a choreographer. From 1973-1980, he lived in New York City and choregraphed for Joffrey II, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Hartford Ballet, and various other companies. Assuming the artistic directorship of Dayton Ballet in 1980, he continued to choreograph until his death. He also held the position of house choreographer for Royal Ballet of Flanders in Belgium. Sebastian choreographed for the Metropolitan Opera in New York and Santiago Ballet in Chile as well. Perhaps his best-known work was Dracula.
He created more than forty works in all. Sebastian died of AIDS-related causes.
