  • IDENTIFICATION AND BIO:
    Composer, Organist, Choirmaster

    B.Mus., Ashland College, Ohio (1973)
    M.Mus., M.S.M, Southern Methodist University, Dallas (1976)
His teachers included Robert Anderson, Larry Palmer, Lloyd Pfautsch, Roger Deschner, and Carlton Young.

Choirmaster and Organist, East Dallas Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Dallas, Texas (1975-1980).
Director of Music and Organist, St. Matthew's Episcopal Cathedral, Dallas, Texas (1981-82).
Director of Music/Choirmaster and Organist, St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church, Plano, Texas (1982-1994).
    Founder, Dallas Pro Musica.

Richard DeLong achieved international recognition in making music for the church. His principal publisher, E.C. Schirmer Music of Boston, said of him: "Richard DeLong's untimely death robbed the world of a young and bright light in the field of church music" (ARSIS Audio/E.C.S., 1996). "...His influence on the life of church music" was felt "both in the creative writing for it and the making of impeccable choral music" (Choristers Guild Letters, 1994).

In recognition of his contribution, Yale University's Institute of Sacred Music established in 1999 the Richard Paul DeLong Prize in Church Music. Given annually to a graduating student, the award is the first named prize in Yale's history honoring the use of talent for the vocation of church musician. The Music Library at Yale also established an archive of DeLong's music manuscripts and related papers (The DeLong Papers), as well as recordings of his music (The DeLong Recordings). His musical legacy comprises more than 180 compositions, written chiefly for church choirs, as well as over 200 hymn descants. Of his 69 works in print, E.C. Schirmer has published the majority; the remainder are in the catalogues of 13 publishers, including Warner/Chappell Music.

DeLong's music is regularly performed in churches throughout the United States and is frequently performed by national and state church and choral music societies. The closing service of the American Guild of Organists 1994 convention featured his Sing to the God of Israel, a children's anthem commissioned for the service by the Choristers Guild and awarded first prize in its competition for children's choral music in the same year.

Professional music societies featuring DeLong's music at their annual conventions include: the National Association of Pastoral Musicians, American Choral Directors Association, Music Educators National Conference, Texas Choral Directors Association, Massachusetts Choral Directors Association, and Texas Composers Forum. The combined Yale and Harvard University Choirs featured his Spring Has Now Unwrapped the Flowers in their Third Annual Festival of Sacred Choral Music held at Yale in 1994.

DeLong's music also has been broadcast both nationally and internationally. In 1996, the BBC Choral Evensong program featured his For God So Loved the World, sung by the choir of The Church of the Advent, Boston, under the direction of Dr. Edith Ho.

From 1982 until his death, DeLong served as Director of Music/Choirmaster and Organist for St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church in Plano (Dallas), Texas — one of the nation's largest Roman Catholic parishes. His East Dallas Christian Choir enjoyed a national reputation, earning praise as "a superbly blended a cappella choir...under the sensitive direction of Richard P. DeLong" (The American Organist, 1979).

DeLong was an active member of the American Guild of Organists, which he served as Dean of the Dallas Chapter from 1981 to 1983; the Royal School of Church Music; the Herbert Howells Society; the National Association of Pastoral Musicians; Choristers Guild; the American Choral Directors Association; Texas Choral Directors Association; and Texas Composers Forum.
