Humphrey Evans III grew up in the Washington, DC area. During his childhood and early teenage years he studied music with Grace Newsome Cushman of Peabody Conservatory, and at Jr. Conservatory Camp in East Burke, Vermont (predecessor of The Walden School).
He earned a bachlor of arts degree in music at Yale University, and received BMI Student Composer Awards in 1963, 1966 and 1969.
Humphrey Evans died of AIDS at the age of 35 in September 1983.
