Derrick Lynel Hamley had a close association with dance throughout his career, writing hundreds of works for ballet.
From 1983 until his death he performed, wrote for and accompanied ballet companies in Denver and Boulder including the Colorado Ballet, the Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Theater and the Denver and Boulder Ballet Arts Centers. Hamley toured internationally as an accompanist for more than 75 ballet seminars and workshops, and was a guest artist with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet in 1989.
In the spring of 1999 he released Solemn Graces, Aubade and The Unveiling, a set of original compositions for piano.
Derrick Lynel Hamley died of AIDS in Boulder, Colorado at the age of 42 on February 9, 2000.
