  • IDENTIFICATION AND BIO:
    Composer, Pianist

Undergraduate studies for three years at Peabody Conservatory
B.A. in Music Composition, California Institue of the Arts (1976)
Studies with Hugo Weisgall and Hal Budd at CalArts, and Jean Eichelberger Ivey at Peabody

After completion of his undergraduate studies, Richard Jetter joined The Peace Corps when a request went out for music teachers for the school systems of Africa. He taught general music, piano and choir at Lott Carey Mission School in Monrovia.

Only a handful of Jetter's nearly two-dozen works were performed during his lifetime, most during his student days at Peabody and CalArts. His Prelude for Brass Quintet was performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC in 1988 in conjunction with the showing of the AIDS Memorial Quilt. In addition to the unperformed orchestral works, the Piano Sonata may be his most important work that still awaits a premiere.

Richard Jetter died of AIDS in San Francisco at the age of 33 on December 26, 1987.
