Ron Athey, Barton Lidice Benes, Rebecca Guberman and Valerie Caris use
body fluids, cremated human ashes and medical histories to create
strongly emotive works which draw attention to our physical limits and
shared mortality. Athey is best-known for the challenging performances
in which he pushes his body to the extreme - at the same time, testing
the audience's boundaries and confronting their perceptions of art,
acceptability, and societal norms. Untitled (Ron Athey - Stomach) uses
the artist's own blood to produce a monoprint of his stomach, creating a
Turin-shroud like image which conjures his death and the imprint his
life will leave. The criss-crossing lines leave a trace or a memory of
scars or pain in the absence of his physical body.
