The Virtual Collection has many strong works of self-portraiture, of
which The Body (Politic) only showcases a few. In particular, pieces by
Jimmy De Sana, John Dugdale, Samuel F.Lewis, Frank Moore and Albert
J.Winn moved me for their powerful perspectives on living with AIDS. Dog
by De Sana induces a smile whenever I see it. The ferocious, snarling
animal with its comic-book nose grabs our attention and draws the eye to
the left corner of the frame. It is only on second glance that the eye
moves diagonally across to the lower right to be challenged by the
artists erect member - its head a sharp and humourous comparison to the
bulbous nostrils of the beast!
