Many artists in the Virtual Collection deal with themes of loss and
absence. Steed Taylor uses digital technology to manipulate images from
his childhood to imagine a world in which he is no longer present. The
images from his family album, in which he blacks out his own image, as
though he no longer existed, seem like images from all our albums,
indeed any album from any family in the Western world. He reminds us of
the ubiquitous nature of AIDS, and its potential presence in everyone.
