Two other organizations have been centrally involved in this effort and are key resources for the dance community:
The Dance Collection of the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts ó one of the world's leading repositories of dance records and related materials.
The Dance Notation Bureau (DNB) is an international organization that saves choreographed works for continued performance. DNB creates dance scores; recording works on paper using a symbol system called Labanotation.
You should be aware that Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts (VLA) stands ready in New York and many other communities to help you legally implement your wishes for the continued life of your work. VLA in New York can guide you to other VLA organizations across the country.
For financial support, you should also be aware of Dancers Responding to AIDS. Dancers Responding to AIDS is a fundraising program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Funds raised by DRA are distributed in two ways, as grants to AIDS services organizations and as Direct Assistance Grants to Dance Industry Professionals. Provided in response to personal request for individual financial assistance from people living with HIV/AIDS in the dance industry nationwide. These grants are made available nationwide through The Actors' fund of America's AIDS Initiative and are distributed for living expenses such as rent, medicine, health insurance, car payments, utilities, etc. All dancers, nationwide, union or non-union, as well as choreographers, ballet masters/mistresses, company managers, administrative staff, musicians, costume/lighting personnel, crew and all theater employees -- anyone affiliated with the entertainment profession nationwide is eligible for financial assistance. Call DRA for information at 212.840.0770. All calls for assistance are completely confidential.
