Here is an overview of certain issues you should be aware of when you are planning your estate. Three general reminders:
1. Start planning and making decisions while you are well. Planning effectively for the disposition and preservation of your work will take some time and you should not be rushed when making decisions.
2. Involve either a private lawyer or the legal department of a service provider. Mistakes can be avoided by using the services of a lawyer.
3. Everyone has an estate. If you are an artist, your work
including tangible records, costumes and sets
are valuable parts of your estate.
Have you made a will?
A will is the traditional way to distribute property after death. Almost everyone is resistant to making a will, but everyone should have one, regardless of health status. This is particularly true for you as an artist, because while you may or may not have a great deal of money, you do have property that needs to be cared for
your art.
