In 1993, VLA launched the Artist Legacy Project, the only pro bono estate planning program specifically designed for artists with HIV/AIDS in the New York area.

There are other legal issues to consider. Your local AIDS service provider is probably the best source of advice in these matters. AIDS service providers deal with these issues daily and can provide you with the most updated information. These issues include:

  • Living Wills-which state your wishes concerning treatment decisions, particularly artificial life support.


  • Health Care Proxies - which enables another person legally to make health care decisions on your behalf.


  • Durable Power of Attorney - which enables another person to make financial and business decisions on your behalf.


  • Guardianship for Minor Children


  • Funeral Instructions


  • Entitlements such as Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid
