  • IDENTIFICATION AND BIO:
    Singer/Songwriter, Poet

Vocalist with Brazilian rock band Barão Vermelho (Red Baron) and popular solo artist

Cazuza began as the vocalist with the first Brazilian rock band, Barão Vermelho, and ended as one of Brazil's best-known solo artists. Although he died young, he had an immense influence on Brazilian popular music, and his songs have been recorded by many other artists.

His father, João Araújo, was a record producer who became president of the Som Livre recording company; his mother was the singer Maria Lúcia Araújo, whose recording of Cartola's "Peito Vazio" (Empty Breast) was included in the soundtrack of one of the first telenovelas (television soap operas — an essential part of Brazilian culture). Cazuza grew up immersed in the MPB (popular Brazilian music) tradition, with a special affinity for the "heartache music" of Cartola, Lupicínio Rodrigues, Dolores Dúran, and Maysa. From age seven he wrote poems that he kept secret from everyone but his maternal grandmother, with whom he was very close. At 17 he began to realize that his poetry could become lyrics, and finally acted on it at 23 when he joined Barão Vermelho.

As a teenager Cazuza was drawn to Baixo Leblon, a bohemian section of Rio known for its artists' bars, and was an enthusiastic fan of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and the Rolling Stones. In 1979 he discovered Beat literature while living in San Francisco. Another important influence for him was Clarice Lispector:

"My literary influences are totally crazy. I never had any method to read this, then that. I read everything at once, mixing Kerouac with Nelson Rodrigues, William Blake with Augusto dos Anjos, Ginsberg with Cassandra Rios, Rimbaud with Fernando Pessoa. I loved to follow Carlos Drummond de Andrade in his walks in Copacabana…But my bedside book was always "A Descoberto do Mundo" (The Discovery of the World) by Clarice Lispector. I love waking up and opening it at whatever page. For me it works much better than I Ching. My lyrics have a lot to do with all these 'sorcerers.'"

Cazuza studied journalism briefly, worked as a press agent at Som Livre and artist promotor at the RGE recording company, and studied photography for seven months at UC Berkeley, but none of this felt right to him. Then in 1980 he took a course with Perfeito Fortuna, director of the revolutionary Rio theater group Asdrúbal Trouxe o Trombone, and discovered that he loved to sing. The singer/composer Léo Jaime noticed him and in 1981 recommended him for a new garage rock band that needed a vocalist. The members of Barão Vermelho — Roberto Frejat (guitar), Dé (bass), Maurício Barros (keyboards) and Guto Goffi (drums) — were doing cover songs, but Cazuza showed them his poems and inspired them to start writing original songs.

Their demo tape impressed the producer Ezequiel Neves and the artistic director at Som Livre, Guto Graça Mello. They persuaded a reluctant João Araújo (who was concerned that the critics would cry nepotism) to let the band record with Som Livre. Barão Vermelho was not a commercial success but was well received by artists such as Caetano Veloso, one of Cazuza's idols. Veloso performed "Todo Amor Que Houver Nessa Vida" (All The Love In This Life) in his own concerts, and criticized the radio stations for not playing the group's songs. Barão Vermelho's second album sold 15,000 copies, almost twice as many as the first, and enhanced the reputation of Frejat and Cazuza as a songwriting team.

The group achieved national fame with the 1984 single "Bete Balanço," the title song for Lael Rodrigues' film in which the band also appeared. It was included in their third album, Maior Abandonado (Of Age And Abandoned), with the equally popular title track. In 1985 they performed in the prestigious Rock 'n Rio Festival, but six months later Cazuza left the band to pursue a solo career. In November he released Cazuza, produced by Neves for Som Livre and featuring new collaborations with Frejat, Neves, Leoni and Arias. "Exagerado" (Exaggerated) and "Codinome Beija-Flor" (Code-Name Hummingbird) were big hits. Cazuza's notoriety grew when the lyrics to "Só As Mães São Felizes" (Only Mothers Are Happy), his homage to Jack Kerouac, were censored in concert.

His second album was recorded in 1986 but that year Som Livre disbanded its roster. Cazuza was now in great demand and had competing offers from several record labels. On his father's advice he transferred to Polygram, and Só Se For A Dois (Only If It's For Two) was released in 1987. Several songs were hits, and the success of "Nosso Amor A Gente Inventa" (We Invent Our Love) led to a national tour with sold-out audiences and critical praise.

In 1986 Cazuza learned he had AIDS. The following year he was hospitalized in Rio and underwent two months of AZT treatment in Boston. He returned in better health, and released Ideologia (Ideology) in 1988. "Ideologia," "Boas Novas" (Good News), "Blues Da Piedade" (Pity Blues) and "Brasil" had strongly political and defiant lyrics. "Brasil" has been rerecorded by many artists, and Gal Costa's version was used as the opening theme for the telenovela Vale Tudo (Everything Goes). Social commentary was present too in "Um Trem Para As Estrelas" (Train To The Stars), composed with Gilberto Gil for a film by Carlos Diegues. Cazuza toured Brazil with Ideologia, directed by the MPB star Ney Matogrosso, and the show became a TV Globo special program and a record. In 1989 he received the Sharp Music Prize for best album, song and video clip ("Brasil").

His fourth album, Cazuza Ao Vivo — O Tempo Não Pára (Cazuza Live — Time Doesn't Stop), was released at the start of 1989 and sold 560,000 copies. Two of the new songs became hits, "Vida Louca Vida" (Life, Crazy Life) and "O Tempo Não Pára." In the title song he compared his own situation, as an individual fighting to stay alive, with that of the Brazilian people. The lyrics are among Cazuza's most expressive.

In February 1989 Cazuza became the first Brazilian celebrity to announce publicly that he had AIDS. As his health worsened and he spent more time in and out of hospitals, he worked compulsively, writing and recording the double album Burguesia (Bourgeoisie) from February to June, in a wheelchair. Apart from the title song with its long lyrics attacking middle-class values, he sang classics by writers such as Antonio Maria, Caetano Veloso and Rita Lee, and two songs he had written with new partners, Rita Lee and Ángela Rô Rô.

Cazuza died of AIDS in Rio de Janeiro at the age of 32 on July 7, 1990.
