Phillip McIntyre was an African-American church musician who served as organist and choir director at several large churches in Richmond, Baltimore and Washington, DC. Much of his work as a composer was based on spirituals.
McIntyre served as a church musician at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Richmond, the Church of Our Savior in Washington, the Metropolitan AME Church in Washington (1978-83), Grace Presbyterian Church (director of music) in Baltimore, and Lincoln Temple Congregational Church of Christ (organist-director) in Washington. He was a member of the District of Columbia Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and served on its executive board.
He gave organ recitals at many venues including The National Shrine, Washington Cathedral, National Presbyterian Church and National City Christian Church in Washington; Morehouse College in Atlanta; The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Richmond; Christ Church Cathedral in St. Louis; Knoxville College in Knoxville, Tennessee; and Union Baptist Church in Baltimore.
McIntyre was guest conductor of the Baltimore All-City Senior High School Chorus for the Music Educators National Conference in Baltimore in 1987. He also served as guest conductor for the annual Messiah Sing-Along at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington. He lectured for the American Guild of Organists and the National Association of Negro Musicians, and made many appearances as a clinician for choral workshops across the nation.
He was a featured composer in the District of Columbia AGO Chapter's 90th anniversary program featuring twentieth-century choral composers, and at the 1988 conference of Chorus America (conductors of professional choruses) held in Washington. His works were frequently performed at the Hampton University Ministers and Organists Conference where he served as organist and associate conductor of the Organists Guild Workshop. His music was included in a 1998 recital of spirituals given by tenor Ronald H. High and pianist Steven Allen in Beaumont, Texas to celebrate the centennials of Jules Bledsoe and Paul Robeson.
Phillip McIntyre died of complications from AIDS in Washington, DC at the age of 40 on March 21, 1991.
